A lector is the person who proclaims the first and second readings of Sacred Scripture at Mass. This lector may also lead the Psalms between readings in the absence of the cantor, and the Prayers of the Faithful.

A lector is called to be a communicator and a storyteller of the richness of God’s love for his people. Lectors are chosen based on their skills in proclamation, their willingness to complete training formation in this ministry and their evidence of a deep spirituality. Lectors are expected to dress in a modest and respectful manner.

The ministry of lector is a charism for the building up of the community, and it requires some native abilities such as confidence, poise and sensitivity to the assembly. Reading skills, the ability to develop proclamation techniques and a clear and steady voice are attributes of a lector. The ministry calls for a person to grow in a warm and loving knowledge of Scripture, the living Word of God. He/she is invited to enter a relationship with The Word of God that is creative, powerful and effective.

All new candidates for lectors must receive training through Workshop given by the Diocese of Brooklyn.

If you feel called to the ministry and you have the attributes to be a lector and would like to participate in the training workshop, contact Louella Armstrong

Youths who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation are welcome.
